PROVIDING LIVELIHOOD TO A COASTAL COMMUNITY 9.15.14

In one small, coastal community in Ternate, Cavite in the Philippines, Larry Guilford saw a chance to make a difference.

The people have access to a rich resource–an ocean teeming with marine life that can sustain their families. Unfortunately, none of them had a boat, and they had to make do with planting root crops and taking what they could from the sea.

With financial assistance from Larry’s Sacred Heart Seminary Class of 1969 in the USA, the 25-family community was granted a 7-seater fishing boat that can be used for livelihood purposes of its residents. It is managed by Tatay (Father) Lino who also serves as a liaison between the village and the Make a Difference Foundation. He makes sure the boat is kept well maintained, and collects all of the rent.

Anyone from the community can rent the boat, the proceeds of which will go to the feeding of the 100+ village kids and the funding of livelihood projects for women in the area.
